The Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida are working tirelessly to make the world a better place through action and service, focusing primarily on environmental issues. Their mission to educate and empower young individuals to grow into confident leaders is evident in their bee conservation efforts.

Education and Awareness

  • Developing educational materials like posters, brochures, and a kids’ coloring book to raise awareness about bee conservation.
  • Organizing community events to educate the public about the importance of bees and the threats they face.
  • Creating seed paper with Florida-friendly seeds that community members can plant to start their own pollinator gardens.

The girls have dedicated over 150 hours to bee conservation, showcasing their commitment to environmental stewardship and community education.

Reducing Pesticide Use

  1. Identifying pesticide use as a major issue leading to declining bee populations.
  2. Encouraging residents to adopt non-toxic strategies to control pests and diseases, such as planting strong-smelling herbs and plants that naturally repel bees.
  3. Providing tips on how to repel bees, such as placing burlap bags on trash cans.

Renee Stoll, director of communications and marketing at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, highlights the importance of reducing pesticide use. She notes that residents often unintentionally contribute to bee deaths by spraying harmful pesticides in their gardens or trash cans.

Achievements and Success Stories

“Being able to have the opportunity to take part in something so influential and powerful is an honor,” said Madison Campbell, a Gold Award Girl Scout who initiated the “Bee Aware” project. “I learned so many amazing things and met so many amazing people. I learned the value of hard work, resilience, and the impact that I can make on the world.”

Campbell’s project involved educating the community about the importance of bees, selling honey to benefit a local beekeeper, and distributing kits to children to support bee habitats. Her initiative earned her the Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts.

Supporting Beekeepers

Beekeeper Challenges Solutions
Habitat loss Supporting local beekeepers and purchasing locally sourced honey.
Pesticides Adopting non-toxic strategies to control pests and diseases.
Climate change Encouraging sustainable practices and reducing carbon footprint.

By purchasing locally sourced honey, individuals can directly support beekeepers’ livelihoods and the important work they do to protect bees.

Bee Conservation and Its Impact

“I just love bees, I think they’re so cute and the fact that they’re so small but yet have such a huge impact on our world is incredible,” said Madison Campbell. “When I was in middle school, I had bee decorations all throughout my room. I wanted everyone to know bees were, and still are, my favorite animal.”

Scouting is an experience that stays with these girls for a lifetime, teaching them valuable lessons like the importance of bee conservation. They have inspired their communities to take action and make a positive impact on the environment.
